Part 5: Open Investigation Challenge - Learning Outcomes

========================================================

Primary Learning Outcomes

Identify Unexplored Territory in Personal Philosophical Landscape

Students will assess their completed archaeological exploration to discover what remains unexcavated, avoided, or unexplained in their ethical reasoning.

Evidence of Learning:

  • Recognizes patterns, frameworks, or tensions that were absent from their dig reports

  • Identifies areas of their ethical reasoning that were consciously or unconsciously avoided during exploration

  • Discovers mysterious artifacts or reasoning patterns that don't fit existing philosophical categories

  • Maps gaps between their lived ethical experience and the frameworks they've explored

Propose Self-Directed Investigation Focus

Students will articulate their own direction for deeper philosophical investigation based on authentic intellectual curiosity about their ethical development.

Evidence of Learning:

  • Formulates original research questions emerging from their archaeological experience

  • Proposes investigation that addresses genuine gaps in their philosophical self-understanding

  • Demonstrates authentic curiosity rather than completing predetermined assignment requirements

  • Connects proposed investigation to specific needs revealed by their conflict map analysis

Design Independent Investigation Methodology

Students will create their own approach for exploring their chosen philosophical territory with appropriate depth and rigor.

Evidence of Learning:

  • Develops personalized methodology suited to their investigation goals and learning preferences

  • Selects appropriate tools, frameworks, or creative approaches for their philosophical exploration

  • Creates realistic scope and timeline for investigation that demonstrates genuine intellectual engagement

  • Designs approach that will generate meaningful evidence of philosophical growth

Conduct Autonomous Philosophical Investigation

Students will execute their self-designed investigation with intellectual independence and critical rigor.

Evidence of Learning:

  • Maintains sustained engagement with challenging or unfamiliar philosophical territory

  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in analyzing complex ethical concepts or tensions

  • Shows intellectual courage in confronting avoided or uncomfortable aspects of their reasoning

  • Produces original insights that extend beyond surface-level analysis of their chosen focus

Demonstrate Learning Through Self-Selected Format

Students will present their investigation results in a format that effectively showcases their philosophical development and discoveries.

Evidence of Learning:

  • Selects presentation format that serves investigation goals rather than impressing through complexity

  • Demonstrates genuine philosophical engagement regardless of chosen format (analytical, creative, applied, etc.)

  • Shows evidence of intellectual growth and expanded perspective through their chosen approach
